The MLBSS Festival of Song
The ethos of the Ledwith Butler Singing Studio is one which encourages
singing for fun in a non-competitive environment. However, competitions
provide an opportunity for young and developing singers to widen their
experience of performance and to challenge themselves in a new way. Several
years ago, the Studio hosted its first in-house Feis, The MLBSS Annual Festival of Song. The Feis includes
categories for all ages and voice types and is now a permanent feature of
the Studio’s calendar.
Younger students are offered a choice of two set pieces, both prepared
in class. Senior pupils are afforded a chance to select their own pieces
– in consultation with Máire – to allow for the
selection of repertoire which best suits their voice type.
Age ranges for each competition are determined based on the students’
abilities and needs each year, and thus categories may change from year to
year.

The WesleyInter-schools Feis
Some students from the studio have chosen to enter the Inter-Schools Feis
which is held in Wesley College, Ballinteer.
Feis Ceoil
Last year several of our students entered the highly acclaimed Feis Ceoil competition in the RDS. The Studio’s Youth
Chamber Choir, Classicus, entered the Feis, winning first place in the
Youth Three Part Choirs Competition.
This year, Classicus Youth Chamber Choir again worked hard and entered
both the Youth Three Part Choirs Competition and the Mixed Voice Choir
Competition. They performed extremely well, coming second in the latter
competition, just behind the highly acclaimed New Dublin Voices.
The
Limerick Festival of Church Music
Classicus Youth Chamber Choir travelled down to Limerick this March to
participate in the Limerick Festival of Church Music. The choir came first
in the Youth Choir Competition, adjudicated by Ite
O’Donovan.
